The star has given the full amount of his £25k Mercury Prize cash to the trust for venues, which works to preserve the Britain's grassroots music venues.

Fender was awarded the cheque on 16 October as his latest record his work was named the top album of the previous year.

He has opted to give the cash to the Music Venues Trust, in recognition of the vital role small stages fulfilled in his early career.

"I personally would not have achieved this success if it wasn't for all the shows I played around the North East, and elsewhere, when I was starting out," said Fender. "These venues are renowned, but they are in difficulty."

Since the start of 2023, more than 150 of these spaces have permanently closed – roughly 16% of the whole industry in the UK.

Recently, top acts like the band Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the trust in its efforts to support the industry, by adding a small levy to their ticket costs, which goes to help independent venues.

Sam Fender also participated, generating in excess of £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to support numerous grassroots venues across England, Scotland, and Wales.

The money helped locations that were dealing with potential shutdown due to issues arising from water damage, blazes and family tragedies, as well as regulatory hurdles, court cases and noise complaints.

Other venues received monetary aid in modernizing infrastructure and gear that directly benefitted artists and audiences.

"The notion that money from performances in big venues supports the local stages, where it kicks off for artists like me, is just logical," the star has stated.

Fender is among several artists to donate his Mercury Prize winnings to worthy causes.

Back when they received the award in the mid-90s for their album their work, frontman the singer declared that the act would donate their winnings to the non-profit the charity.

In 2002, rapper and singer the artist shared her award across several charities, like the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"And I donated a grand to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics class, because I trained in gymnastics when I was younger and they required updated gear," she shared with outlets.

In recent years, Ezra Collective gave their funds to the local youth club that supported their group, as well as other independent music bodies.

And 1994 winners M People donated their prize to a charity for MS after a acquaintance was found to have the illness.

"Winning was ample," said artist Heather Small. "The cash was the cherry on top but we didn't need the extra, because we had the main prize. So our victory touched somebody else's life."

Last week, the trust revealed it had rescued a couple of local spots in the South East, by transferring them to local control.

One venue in the city and the other in that location were acquired under the community ownership scheme, which is funded by the arts council and music fans who purchase "ownership units" in the properties.
