A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the year before. This project was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the army, marking a notable growth of its role in national infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated speed, beating expectations to be partially launched before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised significant apprehensions over construction quality.

In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these national undertakings.
